air ambulance service Helicopter County Midlands Air Ambulance Service located at Royal Air Force Cosford in Shropshire

We have all heard of, and some of us have seen the Air Ambulance Service, which in the UK uses Helicopters. The aircrafts job is quite different from the well-known Air Ambulance Service in Australia, called The Royal Flying Doctor Service. Because of the distances involved and the terrain being open in Australia, whilst here in the UK in most of England, its high-density buildings, a conventional civil winged aircraft could not land. This Air Ambulance Service in Shropshire & the West Midlands was called the "The County Air Ambulance Service" it is now the Midlands Air Ambulance

All the states in Australia also have a helicopter medical emergency service, except perhaps the main body of the Northern Territories. I should perhaps add here that Scotland also has a Fixed wing emergency medical service operating in the northern regions, this service has had different forms in the way the service is delivered. It generally covers the Islands and northern mainland.

All these services are serious lifesavers. The pilots are skilled as are the paramedics who man the Helicopter. Because this is their job, they themselves may not see how high we truly hold them in our society. Ground vehicle Ambulance crews are in that same category, they are skilled and very very competent, its hard to think of sections of our working society that are held in higher esteem, but of course, their equals do exist in other services. The actual disposition of people who do this particular job must be of a high standard, dealing with people in terribly shocked situations requires more than skill, it requires that special person who can by virtue of their personal psyche & disposition, deliver more than competent medical skill. Just to see that face of genuine concern when you are in need is a tonic in itself, that soothing hand, that calm voice, followed by their medical skill, all this I can personally testify to, but not as the result of a traffic accident I am glad to say.

We don't want their service, because we all want to be well and fit, not involved in accidents on the road or elsewhere,,, but every day the air ambulance service will be called out to emergencies, the photographs below show the County Air Ambulance service stationed at RAF Cosford taking off on another mission of mercy, trying to save another life. They also show the Helicopter and its equipment areas and the cockpit.

The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is responsible for funding and operating three Air Ambulances serving the Midlands and Welsh border region. Flying its first mercy mission in 1991, the organisation is regarded as one of the longest established and busiest Air Ambulance operators in the UK.

Our three aircraft carry a crew of three, Pilot, two Paramedics or a Flight Doctor and Paramedic all of which are funded solely by the Charity and our helicopters also carry full life support medical equipment. It is generally accepted that the first hour after an accident is a crucial time for any patient.

If a patient reaches hospital during those first 60 minutes the chances of survival are greatly increased. That's why the rapid response of an Air Ambulance is so vital in an emergency situation. The maximum flying time to the nearest hospital from anywhere in the region is less than 15 minutes, Midlands Air Ambulance has now flown more than 30,000 missions.

The Charity has an unrivalled reputation as a "life saver" and is the only provider of the three air ambulance helicopters serving the communities of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire What is not widely known is Midlands Air Ambulance is funded solely by the public and local businesses.

We receive no government money or National Lottery funding. The generosity of the public helps to raise the £5.6 million required each year to ensure our three helicopters remain operational and help save lives across the region. Your donation directly goes to funding the operation to maintain an develop this vital emergency service.

Midlands Air Ambulance has attended over 3000 Missions over the past 12 Months. Each of our three Air Ambulance aircraft is called out on a flying mission on average 4 or 5 times a day. On occasions the flight crew is stood down for reasons such as a land ambulance is nearer to an accident or arrives first on the scene to assess the situation, releasing the Air Ambulance to be utilised elsewhere. Each helicopter costs £25 per minute to maintain and £500 on each take off.
