Aurora Borealis & Auroral Curtain Photographs

The Aurora Borealis is a wonderful sight, Auroral curtains are one of the main manifestations of this phenomena.
As a Radio ham living on the cliff tops of the north coast of Scotland for about 20 years I was privileged to see very many.
Some Radio hams make it their personal interest to bounce radio signals off this curtain or flow of particles.
It is actually a flow of particles from the Sun that enter the earth’s polar atmosphere. Some may be inclined to think that its an ionised static region but this is not true, it is a region that moves in all directions but,,,,, the particles entering the rarefied upper atmosphere are where the signals bounce from. Because these particles are moving there is a Doppler shift, in other words, it like a train coming towards you sounding his whistle, as it passes the tone changes down frequency, yet,,,, we know the sound is the same coming from the engine.

One of my radio systems used to point into what is known as "The Auroral Region", it was set to trigger if any particles entered the region.
As a result I was in a position to have an early warning system of such events and be able to take advantage of them, also to go outside and look at the visual effect, which is not always present. There are many types, the photos below are of one type only, curtain effect, so I will not bore you with the other types and their magical splendour.
Its true to say that witnessing some events, as they are called, makes you think of Star Trek or Voyager as it is today, also the Hubble telescope which really photographs space and its wonderful pictures.
