Free Driving Lessons for HGV1 Driving, well its quite possible that if you pass the entry requirements for the Part Time Army Group, they might teach you how to drive an HGV1 outfit, cant be bad.

If I might reminisce again, as a 17 year old lad I joined the RAF, did square bashing at West Kirby, Electrical Trade training at Melksham, then a posting to Germany, here comes the Truck bit,,,,,, I was posted to a mobile field photographic unit, 8MFPS or 8MFPU, they were know affectionately as a Muff Puss. Assuming we did not have about 50 drivers standing around most of the time with nothing to do, (which we did not) all the members of the unit had to be taught to drive.

This we did around the aircraft parking areas of the airfield, when were able to do this without bouncing off nearby objects, (errrr well jet planes,,) as we drove, we were allowed out for further training in Germany. Eventually I was taught to drive the large articulated photographic laboratories. It seems they discovered I damaged fewer aircraft than most.(honest I did not hit any aircraft, just winding you chaps up a bit).

I also became the Chief Operator at the Station cinema (evenings and weekends only operation in my spare time), which was larger than perhaps most in the UK, so you can judge I became linked to photography and films and the Media, then later Ham Radio and talking to the World before Mobile phones were in use. Also working data packets on HF and VHF/UHF before the internet was born.

On discharge from the RAF some 5 years later, I drove HGV1 amongst many other vehicles, around the British Countryside and was again paid for it. Stress came with the job as all you drivers know, and for me it was fun apart from the stress. That’s how I came to be a HGV driver, bus driver, chauffeur on Rolls Royce and many others, including fast cars that cruised at 125MPH on the M1 Motorway, note I said cruised! all back in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. This was a pleasure, but it was a stressful life for me, so back to electrical work, education, electronics, businesses, and computing for most of my life. Did I mention I still love transport Cafes, which is why this Website was created.

I enjoy drinking Coca Cola and can still hear the Clunk of a coke bottle dropping into the basket of a refrigerated machine at the RAF Mess at 1am, complete with all the moisture drops as the warm moist air condensed on it, wonderful!

It may be that some young person reading this will contact the Army to join the Territorial Army, or full time RAF or Royal Navy, well its not a bad way to go, adventure, a changing life, remember life is for living, but living should, or must, mean being considerate of others down life’s road, helping them if you can. Whatever you do in life, don’t turn your back on those that need a hand, Don’t walk by!
