This Cafe (Hartside Top) which is suitable for all comers including Transport is located on the A686 which runs between Penrith and Alston or Hexham (very near), which is about 7 miles south of Alston (or the A689 Junction) on this A686
As you can see this is a famous Cafe and not many HGV will pass by here, but, they do if little choice. What HGV driver wants to climb a hill to 1904ft, then, face the challenge of going down the other side, which is worse. Car drivers more often than not don't appreciate braking limitations on an HGV. Tippers carrying stone were on this road, I am sure a few multi drop drivers would use this route also, but its the real territory of the White Van Man. Then there are Travellers/Visitors who would find this stop very useful, plus professional drivers on holiday in the area, its a heck of a view on a clear day...WOW...
A horse box was taking a rest on top in the foreground, many bikers and walkers also favour this lone Transport Cafe.
February 2006 I updated this page by adding more photographs, however the page itself will be updated to a new format before February has expired.

Just kidding lads, I am sure they are many times better than my old Norton used to be.
