Jacks Hill Transport Cafe (Truck Stop) is located on the A5, just north of the A43 roundabout intersection. If your northbound its on the near side. The entrance and approach is one of the easiest from either direction.
Jacks Hill Transport Cafe (truck stop) was operating in the 1950s, I used it quite a lot as a breakfast stop early in the day.
A Fuel station used to be operating on the frontage area, but this no longer does so. Parking is plentiful at the rear. Not many Transport Cafes (truck stop is a new word, possibly American) have operated for about 50 years, the A5 used to have some 100 possibly, from London to Holyhead. Many were between London and the Birmingham area. There was a Transport Cafe called the 46 on the north side of Bletchley (Milton Keynes) by the old railway bridge on the old A5. I remember being aware that it was so called because it was the 46th Transport Cafe from London.
There is a take away there now of the imported type, the number 46 is still in evidence on the building.
I have called in at Jacks Transport cafe for a meal a few times, I have not been disappointed. Meat and two veg is good value and healthy.
I noticed the egg and chips, a tasty meal when cooked correctly, here it was just right, nice clean whole chips, and two eggs white and also clean on the plate.
Egg and chips is a simple food, uncomplicated, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
When its done with care and thought it’s a fine and enjoyable meal with bread and butter and that mug of tea. Posh Restaurants can cook meals with wonderful names, which is fine, as is the price, but,,,, when simple foods like this are done well,,,,, they take a lot of beating, keep up the good work Jacks Hill café.
There was also a Jacks Hill Transport Cafe on the old A1 north of Balddock, it is no longer, but the name Jacks Hill garage still does business. You can see a black and white photograph of this taken from the air in the period 1949 1953 by an Royal Air Force photographer friend of mine. It was very low level so all is plain to see. You can see the photo http://www.transportcafe.co.uk/trucking_photographs_54.html on this websites photo gallery list page. I have not linked this page as you can copy and paste if required.
Jacks Hill Transport Cafe Tower is quite a landmark and famous in the Transport Cafe world. Parking is available in plenty for HGV at the rear of the Transport Cafe. The problem with society today (2003) is that transport cafes like this tend to get bought by property developers or Little chef for other uses, simply because there is more money to be made doing this. Jacks Hill Cafe is located on the northern boundary of Milton Keynes, and so fair game.
All you Knights of the road, enjoy these facilities while you can, they wont be there forever, I deeply regret.
Below is the approach as you see it from the north
I dont think Jacks Transport Cafe was around at this period in time, but it shows that transport has come a long way, something we dont all appreciate. The professional driver keeping the life blood of a nation pumping.
We have all had a look at what would happen if Transport came to a halt. The nation would die fast, unless you live in the country, are faster than Brer Rabbit and keep geese as the picture shows.
