Just back from a couple of days in the north east, planed to stop at the "Night Owl" truck stop located just off the A1 at Birtley/Portobello, but on arrival i found it closed with a security fence across the entrance, !!.Finally i parked up on the industrial estate 2 minuets further down Portobello lane,200 yards walk and there’s the "Board Inn" very friendly, clean and good food, cooked freshly, also a range of daily specials. RE:- location for (a)parking &(b) the Board Inn, (a)Portobello industrial estate, head south down Portobello road, turn right into either penshaw way or shadon way, best to try and arrive after 5pm and depart before 6.30 am as factory workers park along these roads. (b)the Board Inn is at the junction of Portobello road and Birtley lane. Best Regards Ray.

Night Owl do change their times of operation at their 5 Transport cafes in the UK, whilst they are aware (and have been asked) they can notify this site of changes they don’t! So please don’t depend on the cafe times or even shop. If important I suggest you phone them for confirmation because I cant keep up unless they are helpful. Newcastle upon Tyne Night Owl Lorry Park Truck Stops and transport Cafe is one of the two northern outposts of Night owl, Carlisle is on the M6 M74 west coast route north, whilst Birtley Newcastle upon Tyne Night Owl is the east coast route.

Lorry Park capacity is about 250 trucks and all in high security 8ft electrified fencing built to police standards.
