Update in November 2004. The service and standard seems the same. It is worth mentioning that this is a REAL 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK OPEN ALL HOURS TRANSPORT CAFE,,, WITH A RANGE OF FOODS ALLWAYS AVAILABLE, AND THE STAFF ARE CHEERY AND HELPFUL.

I called in two or three times thanks to Alec Oldroyd, Wincro Metal Industries Driver from Sheffield who mailed me with this one. Alec is right, its very good and I was fortunate enough to be able to sample the food. I had their homemade meat pie with real pastry crust and dumplings, lots of veg and potatoes, really nice. Another day I couldn’t resist the battered fish just from the look of it.
The catering staff were excellent, the CB shop had a range of truckers goods for the Cab. They take cards and do mail order if you call them.
I have to say that I have been involved in catering for 20 years and business for 30 years, I am fussy, I also know when food is done with care, this battered cod was cooked at the perfect oil temperature, for the correct length of time, and the fish was just ace, the accompaniments were also just fine.
You cannot judge any establishment on a few visits, however Alec Oldroyd praised this transport cafe truck stop and it does seem consistently good. Thanks Alec

Directions are as follows, when northbound on the M6 follow the M56 signs initially, then the A50 Holms Chapel. If you don’t know its confusing. Following the A50 Holms chapel signs gets you on top of the motorways, ready to go in any direction, I have included a scan of a map to help you locate this top.
At the roundabout ending of the long slip road turn right on the A50 and proceed to the 2nd of two more roundabouts.
Here its obvious but turn right into the Cafe and keeping left follow round into the drop bar controlled parking area. Cars and vans use the front car park, do NOT bear left.

This Truck stop has been absorbed into the MOTO GROUP recently, this is the combination of Granada and Compass group I understand, so chaps .... watch for any changes in the standard of service and quality and quantity in this transport cafe and keep me posted.

Information on Poplar Services supplied by Cliff of Lorry Bits, a CB shop on this site, this was a reply to a mail from a site visitor.

John at Transport Café UK, has forwarded your question to me, as we have the CB and truck accessory shop on the site. The answer is, Poplar 2000 Services opened in 1994, (I think it was around May.) The original truckstop, "The Poplars" was just across the road from here, it was known to everyone as "Pops.". That was there for many, many years, I can’t give you an exact date, but I know for sure that it was there in the late ‘50s.
