But not always Blowing the trumpet
for this Transport Cafe Truck Stop.
Reports as follows from independent drivers. Last report first.
Last Report May 2005
This Transport cafe has a Chequered time regards reports. I understand the lorry park is full at night or quite full, at the same time I have had reports of good dinners and bad or poor breakfasts. Flooded toilets over a long period in time. I have asked drivers known to me to report findings, and my guarded comments are this is a very chequered operation, be aware!
Called this morning 12-11-04 had a large breakfast 2 sausages, beans egg bacon fried bread toast and bread n butter oh and a type of burger, mug of coffee with free refills £4-70 which I thought was reasonable not the hottest but ok the toilet had a problem, possibly temporary. Potholes still as bad.

I called into Quernhow services on the A1 North Bound, the Lorry Park is full of deep pot holes (rain hides their depth) except for the parking in front of the café area which has been block paved, however, it’s cordoned off to stop HGV’s parking on it, and is only open to light vehicles. HGV’s have to make do with Pot holes full of mud and water on a wet day, the Breakfasts are very low quality as your user stated, however, the Dinners are a very good quality and value for money. I had the dinner but was sitting with a chap who had the breakfast, and it looked very sloppy to be honest.
Other reports welcome as they may improve over time, or get worse as we all know.
I have another report: No mention is made of the quality, but we can assume he was satisfied as was his Asda Uncle: Comments as follows:------
I note that you may be looking for pictures of the Quernhow Cafe on the A1. I recently visited the cafe on the up to Newcastle with my family. I am an expat that lives in the US and wife loves a full English breakfast.
We stopped at the Quernhow on the advise of my uncle who drives for ASDA. Anyway here are a couple of pictures. If need larger sized pictures, just let me know.
Thanks.

Hi John.
Yes, I can confirm that the truck section of the park is full of very bad potholes. It is only when you get closer to the building where the cars park that the surface becomes flat. If you are driving a car and try to negotiate the park at more than 5mph you could do some damage to the car.
The inside of the cafe is classic mid 1970's but the food is very good and the service was fast. There are two high chairs available so it is "kid friendly". The chairs were a bit greasy but in good working order. Overall The Querhow was just what you would expect from a classic UK transport cafe. Good food at a decent price with no-nonsense fast service.
I am looking forward to your web site updates.
Thanks.
Leighton Gill
Webmaster comments:---- At a guess I would say we have a breakfast cook who is not on the ball, whilst another may be just fine, this can be a problem for those who employ others without checking enough. I cannot think of another reason for conflict in reports.
I also note the pic of the transport cafe park, called by the sender a car park,,,, are the super potholes still there,,, perhaps you know? if so please tell me. Leighton Gill got back to me and said yes they are,,, so take care, bend all exhausts over the cab when entering,,,

The Quernhow Transport Cafe is located on the A1 at about the same level as Thirsk. After passing the A61 intersection its about another 2 miles. Close to a little chef on the other carriageway and the B6267 intersection.
The Quernhow has been under the same ownership since 1962. Then in November 2000 it has been taken over by the Southbound operation "The Little Bistro Transport Cafe", This Transport Cafe is also listed on this web site.
Any reports please to the webmaster on the mail link below.
Little Bistro has no connection with this Transport Cafe now, both are seperate operations, dated january 2005.
You can Fax reports or send details of any Transport Cafe for inclusion on this website.

QUERNHOW TRUCKSTOP ON A1
This an excellent truck stop. Food is always fresh and there is a large parking area. When I stop there again , I will ask for some pictures. They also have holiday chalets round the back.

A breakfast at the Quernhow, taken by an American calling by en-route for the Northern Uk,,, Ok he called because an Asda HGV1 driver Uncle told him it was a good stop,,, and our American friend Leighton Gill was impressed,,, so much he took the photo, got back to America and then sent it back to me via e mail,,, WOW! aint things wonderful. When I was an active radio ham we used to send dot pictures across the world by HF,,, that’s high frequency,,, usually 14 Mhz or 21 Mhz,,, using a data mode called "Pactor" or "G-tor", or better slow scan transmission,, but that was in black and white and low definition,,, bouncing the signal off the ionosphere,,,,, ,,,,,, Ahhhhh! those were the days!
I can still do that,, "Look no satellites".

I was in the Quernhow in July 2007 and the food was very good(home made pie, potatoes and veg+unlimited tea or coffee was just over a fiver) This was around 4pm and the car park was fairly empty, so you could steer round most of the potholes! The cafe was clean, as were the toilets & washrooms. Suprisingly, most of the staff were East European (does this mean that stroganoff &goulash will soon become everyday items on the menu?!!!)The Soundman
