COMMENTS DECEMBER 2007

Called in here on one of my rare trips to the western side of Scotland,, The weather was absolutely awful (rain, thick fog, and dark) so I decided to pull off the M74 at around 8.30pm,,, and after a few miles the illuminated cafe sign came into view like an oasis in the desert! The parking is excellent on the cafe car park (truck) and the lay-by that runs alongside is enormous (be warned the lay-by is one way) The owners very hospitable and the food is nearly all home made. If you fancy a drink when you are parked up for the night the bar in the cafe is more than adequate. In all its a good place to be when you want a few home comforts when out on the road.

New CCTV security system now installed and new lighting and security fencing being built.

From M74 Junction 12/A70 take B7078 South for exactly 4 miles on the right. Southbound leave M74 at Junction 11 past Happendon Services to roundabout at A70 turn right for Douglas ˝ mile turn left on B7078 then 4 miles. The B7078 is the Old A74 and runs parallel with the M74. In the 1940,s and 1950,s there used to be holes in the road, today its excellent.

(Please note that this golden oldie has the words "HOTEL" written on its wall still) This Old Transport cafe has had a few turbulent years but is now under new management. This management is dedicated to Truckers & Travellers alike. Take the lady with you! Different managements had turned in other directions. Its open from 6.30am Monday to Friday 8.00 am Saturday and Noon on Sunday and close at Midnight everyday, then closed every Saturday this January for maintenance and renovation, painting the rooms etc. This might be the oldest transport cafe - Truck stop in Scotland and probably the UK. Located on the old A74. The food is very good Jamie says and Parking is safe. Very "Special" deals for Truck drivers regarding parking and meals. From Jamie HGV Driver. I understand this original golden oldie Transport Café, has made some changes, and is trying for the next century, I hope it is successful.
I called in to see this Truck Stop and the attitude of the those present was excellent, I had some home made soup and my associate had a chip butty original style with a butter platter, lots of it and lots of chips to make your own, chips were reported good.
Other drivers were present and seemed very satisfied, likewise some overnight stoppers.
If ever you get a little bored with the motorway turn of here and run the one junction distance over the moors on this old A74. In the 1940,s and 1950,s this road used to be called "Suicide Ally" at night because of Night Trunkers running between the borders, I did use this road but with great care, no more will be said,,, nuff said as they say! Thank goodness things have changed in this respect.
Give this establishment a try and see what you think, then tell me as well as the boss, he seems to be the sort who wants to listen.
I noticed weetabix transport using this overnight stop on the two occasions I have called by, guess what the cereal is for breakfast .. no brownie points for weetabix.
