More Information from Ken Powell
Blowing the trumpet
for another Transport Cafe Truck Stop.
Ken says,,,,
I met up by chance the other day with the chap (now retired) who used to be the Managing Director where I worked. An excellent fellow (some of them are!), We were at a get-together of employees past and present. He was praising the virtues of, This Transport Cafe he had found at Hellaby, called the Stockyard, He was always considered a bit of a connoisseur when it came to food and drink and I found his addiction to the Transport Cafe truck Stop surprising. He and his wife seem to be regular callers to the carvery at lunchtimes and gave it high marks.
With this in mind, I was in that area the other evening and decided to see if I could find the place. It took a while as I didn't see too many useful signs - but, the whole road, off the M18 at Junction 1 has recently been redone.
As indicated it is at Hellaby, near Rotherham, S.Yorks off the M18 at Junction 1
if westbound (from A1/Doncaster) leave at Junction 1, first exit and first left at the next roundabout.
When I found it, it was about 20.30hrs. It was packed - I would say 200 plus trucks and room probably for as many more.
Considering this I decided it was a very popular place and obviously well know. It looked so busy I didn't go in, and I had elderly passengers who I had taken out for an evening ride and thought it unfair to keep them out too long.
HGV Driver Vic sent the following report.
Went to this one last night (Thursday 22nd January 2004). Still busy. Standards very good very clean over on the hardstanding area, but some bad potholes on the rest of the area.
Saw quite a few car-transporters grounding and very nearly getting stuck.
Evening meal is good with a choice of meats and veg.
Parking costs £7.00 so with a meal it comes to about £12-13 and it’s definitely worth it.
Mind you as it is a carvery it is a little ostentatious. It’s the only truckstop where I have found subdued lighting and a candle and flower at every table J. not too bad if you have the wife with you though.
It looks like they have a mobile truck accessories shop there, but its only open during the day so I havnt been able to check that out.
Se ya,
REPORT FROM WAYNE HGV DRIVER
I myself stop at the stockyard t/s 5 to 8 times year and must say I find it one of the best if not the best truck stops there is. The food is fantastic and plentiful, the ambience is very nice, but not every truck drivers likes flowers & candles on the table, but it goes well with interior, also has a reading book exchange service, read a book leave it on the table pick up another,, return in a few weeks time do the same agine. loads of parking and easy to get to.

A letter here from Steve of Steve Yates Transport Wigan,,, he is known colourfully on E Mail as "MrGroundControl", good one
He says the following,,,,
THE STOCKYARD at ROTHERHAM J1 off the M18 if travelling North come off at J1 turning right at roundabout turn left & follow the main drag through the ind est (watch your step adverse camber on bends) half way through the ind est you start to see truck stop signs
Damned good food & plenty of it,
good bar with live entertainment on Thursdays, mobile shop on site selling truck goodies, ample parking, some hard standing, some rather rough ground, even so WELL worth a visit.
