Thurso is about 1 mile from the port of Scrabster, which was the only north coast port for HGv and cars. Was because there is now another perhaps cheaper port at Gills Bay, this is located between Thurso and John O Groats.
Gills Bay is another roll on roll and is a much quicker sea passage, perhaps less than one hour. When I called in January it was closed with no sign of life so I'll add the info on this when I learn more.
Arriving on the A9 into Thurso you arrive at the traffic lights.
Crossing these lights proceed across the bridge with your right indicator on.
Take the first turn right over the bridge as per the tourist sign.
Follow the road until you see the Truck Park on the off side, some 400 0r 500yds down. You can see the bridge from the lorry park photo below.
Thurso overnight parking has quite a number of food facilities within 5 minutes walk. One facility open all day and evening (not Sunday), is the fish and chip shop and all its variables of food that these establishments have these days. There are no traffic hold ups between Thurso and Gills Bay.
Apart from the Fish and Chip shop below (see photograph), you can walk back to the bridge on the A9, Turn Right and continue through the traffic lights past the war memorial gardens and turn right again. 50 yds on the right is Sandra's take away. Ask anyone for directions. A Chinese Restaurant take away is also located next door to Sandra's.
I understand E Mail can be sent from Sandra's which also has Bunk house facilities which I mention in passing.
Times for Sandras as follows.....
Mon/Thurs 007.30am until 11.45pm (23.45hrs)
Friday 07.30am until 01.45hrs (am)
Saturday 07.30am until 01.45hrs (am)
Sunday 07.30am (hrs) until 10.45pm (22.45hrs)
Very good hours of biz for the customer, the late arriving HGV or professional driver/traveller.

Below. Looking towards Thurso bridge and the A9, from the lorry park.
Below..Showing the Lorry Park, always lots of space for overnight, no worries here regards being crowded. Ypu can always go to Scrabster Port if you are sailing from there, watch out at bank holidays though, but should be always special space for HGV.
