That’s the finding of independent tests validated by scientists at a university in the UK, and the real-world experience of truck fleet operators here, in Canada, and in Asia. The product they tested, Cataclean, is manufactured in Britain and now widely available throughout the country in five-litre bottles and 25-litre containers ideal for truck workshops.
Cataclean is offered in two formulas, both patented, for petrol and diesel engines. As well as improving engine care and performance in trucks, Cataclean also benefits specialist industrial machinery, vans, cars, and motorcycles. In fact, Cataclean is so good at reducing the risk of diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogging in cars, and so effective at clearing filters that have already clogged, that it is now carried by the RAC’s 1400 patrol vehicles. It is also especially helpful prior to MoT tests, where it can reduce emissions readings.
In trucks, long-term tests conducted at International container port Terminals were independently validated by the faculty at John Moores University, Liverpool. Analysis concluded that Cataclean improved the fuel consumption of all the vehicles treated with it, gaining an average improvement of 22.1 per cent. Analysis also showed the vehicles achieved an average reduction in emissions of 33.3 per cent.
These impressive test results have led to the port using Cataclean in its entire fleet of 100 trucks. The product is also being applied to the 600 kilowatt (800 bhp) diesel generator systems which power the Rubber Tyre Gantry cranes (RTGs) responsible for unloading, stacking and loading heavy containers.
In another real-world environment, in Canada truck fleet operators have reported making 5-7 per cent reductions in fuel consumption since Cataclean first went on sale in British Columbia and Alberta in July 2015. And even when trucks are subjected to the urban stop-start, which is tough on fuel consumption and emissions, Cataclean has delivered savings. When a UK leader in waste management solutions extensively tested Cataclean in four of its refuse vehicles operating in London, they showed an average fuel consumption saving of 4.3 per cent.
That figure might not be as spectacular as the one from the gentler working conditions of the port, but it still represents a saving worth having, especially when Cataclean is rolled-out across more of the fleet.
Cataclean contains solvents that can break down deposits formed by oxidation and polymerisation of hydrocarbon (harmful carbon build-up) in the fuel delivery and exhaust systems. When Cataclean combusts, carboxylic acids, aldehydes and active peroxy compounds are formed. These compounds in the exhaust vapours work to clean and remove the harmful carbon build up in the exhaust system including the diesel particulates in and prior to the DPF. The result reduces the need for the DPF to regenerate and helps to prevent the DPF from clogging.Regular use of Cataclean, every 3-4 months, also reduces the build-up of residue ash in the DPF thereby extending the life of the DPF. Cataclean does not alter the composition of the fuel.
Cataclean also includes acetone, which has been used in motorsport to enhance octane rating and make fuel burn more evenly and completely. To use Cataclean, all that’s required is to pour 1 part Cataclean to 30 parts fuel. For optimum results this ratio should be applied to one quarter tank of fuel. For example, in a 120 litre tank you should apply 1 litre of Cataclean to 30 litres of fuel. The truck should then be operated normally for at least 15 minutes and re-fuelled when necessary. The independent tests have shown that, after the Cataclean treatment, the engine’s fuel consumption will gradually deteriorate towards its previous level, meaning that Cataclean should be applied every three months.
