Route 74 winners 2015

Route 74 Truckstop on the M74 at Lesmahagow (ML11 0JN) has been crowned Truck Stop of the Year 2015 by our sister publication, Truckstop News.

Eight establishments were shortlisted for the top prize – and over the last few weeks a team of expert judges were dispatched to anonymously appraise each of them.

Judging was impartial, and Truckstop News reported that the results saw Route 74 take the top spot due to the quality of its facilities, great food and first-class service.

The newspaper’s judge said: “Having just opened in the summer of 2014, Route 74 is certainly the new kid on the block. However, it has redefined the standard for a truck stop by creating a modern and comfortable place to stop that ticks all the boxes. Their opening times are fantastic with food served 6 am to 10 pm every day, and a 24-hour service for showers, toilets, cash machines and their shop.

“Its American-style diner is welcoming and has a menu very much like a restaurant, with starters, mains and desserts. The portions for the mains were generous, and although it wasn’t the cheapest for food, the service and selection was impressive. The service was very friendly and there was a good mix of truckers and the public.

“Route 74 has set a very high standard for truck stops and we hope to see more like this in the coming years!”

The truck stop‘s facilities include a 24-hour shop, truckwash, carwash, bunkered fuel (including AdBlue), spotless modern showers and toilets for men and women, several widescreen televisions and free WIFI.

Route 74’s general manager, Bill Law, told said: “Built on a site adjacent to an old truck stop at Lesmahagow, Route 74 was seen as an opportunity to create something new and special. Much thought was put into its planning, construction and development. Truck drivers have a lonely job and work long and unsociable hours. We wanted to create a truck stop where they could come and park safely, relax in a comfortable environment after a hard day and enjoy freshly cooked food at affordable prices.

“We are delighted to have won this award and the company and its staff wish to thank all their customers for their support and for voting Route 74 Truck Stop of the Year.”

This year, Truckstop News has also awarded prizes for truck stops that excel in particular areas. The award for Best Food went to The Cabin Café (A264, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 4SE). “The service was warm and welcoming and you could tell truck drivers really enjoyed stopping off here,” said the judge. “The food was delicious, came quickly and the service was excellent. They even had truck-themed breakfasts – and you could get a good cup of tea for 50p.”

Picking up the award for Best Facilities is The Red Lion Truck Stop (M1 Junction 16, Northampton, NN7 4DE). “This was the first stop on our judging journey and it set the benchmark for all the other establishments. The most impressive things about The Red Lion are the showers and toilets – the men’s and women’s facilities were of a very high spec and wouldn’t have looked out of place in a boutique hotel.”

Finally, The Stockyard (Hellaby Lane, near M18, Rotherham, S66 8HN) swept up the Best Parking award. “The Stockyard offers over 200 tarmac’d truck spaces. It has large security fencing, CCTV cameras and numberplate recognition. The space is flat and there’s plenty of room to manoeuvre long vehicles, as well as an easy-access entrance and exit. Coupled with the good opening hours and entertainment available at The Stockyard, this is a great overnight stop for truckers.”

Transport Cafe would like to offer our warmest congratulations to all the winners!
