One of the best-known truckstops, Jack’s Hill Café is close to the A5/A43 interchange near Towcester. It has been in business since 1955 and also markets itself as ‘bikers’ caff’ and meeting point.

If you are heading east to west on the A43 then you need to turn right and head up along the A5 towards Daventry but only for about a quarter of a mile and its there on the left.

There is ample parking at the rear for up to 50 trucks and overnight parking is £18 per night. The café is open from 0700 every morning until 2030, Mondays to Thursday and 0700-1430 on Fridays and Saturdays with Sundays being 0730-1400.

A good selection

For those wanting a breakfast there is a good selection on offer, starting at £4.90 for a Driver’s breakfast which includes egg, two rashers of bacon, two sausages, beans or tomatoes (or a bit of both). For 90p more is the Bumper Breakfast which includes the extras of a burger, fried potatoes and both beans and tomatoes.

The super breakfast, at £6.45, is egg, two rashers of bacon, sausage, burger, fried potatoes, baked beans, tomatoes and black pudding. The vegetarian breakfast is £4.40 and comprises egg, fried potatoes, beans, tomatoes and a fried slice.

The saver breakfast is £5.49 and you get bacon, egg, sausage, beans or tomatoes, two hash browns, bread & butter, tea or coffee, although you can’t change anything on this choice!

You can add any extra to bump up your breakfast, including bubble and squeak, extra hash browns, mushrooms, fried bread and the like.

A mug of tea is a quid, while coffee is £1.30 and you get a second mug of tea or coffee for free when you buy any set breakfast or dinner of the day. They also offer milky coffee, hot chocolate (made with either milk or water) as well as Cappuccinos.

For those not wanting a full breakfast, then you can get eggs – poached, fried or scrambled – on toast or for those wanting to get away quicker, then a egg, bacon and sausage bap will set you back £3.20.

Moving on to lunchtime there are a choice of meals, such as egg and chips, sausage egg and chips, lasagna, pork chop, chips and peas, and other variations. These are available with chips or salads. There are also traditional favourites like fish and chips, scampi and chips, burgers, omelettes and salads.

There is also a children’s menu and a snacks menu of sandwiches or baps (hot and cold), soup and a wide range of deserts

The café can seat up to 70 people, and there is outside seating should the weather be favourable. There is a fully licensed bar is open until late.

The café also offers free wi-fi, showers, single and twin room accommodation and a cash machine on site. There is also Freeview TV for the major sporting events.

All major fuel cards are accepted including Snap account and there is also garage should you need any minor running repairs to you truck.

Good grub

The quality of the food is very good indeed and the environment is clean. This place has all the feel of a good old classic truckstop but it is clean and tidy and the food is top notch.

The staff are also very jolly and helpful, all vital ingredients to making this a decent enough place to stop off at. This is certainly one of the better truckstops I have visited. It was shortlisted for TSN’s Truckstop of the year, and while it didn’t win, it was certainly worthy of that shortlisting, and it offers value and quality.
