The PJM Lorry Park in Coventry was shortlisted for the TSN ‘Truckstop of the Year’ and while it didn’t win the overall gong, it is certainly an establishment you should consider using if you are passing or stopping over in the area. The one word that strikes you when you enter the canteen is cleanliness.

It is in south east Coventry, and is easy to get to from the myriad of motorways that cross through the West Midlands including the M1, M6, M69, M45, M40, M5 and M42. The address is Rowley Road, Coventry, CV3 4PY, close to where the A45 meets the A46.

The site has parking for 160 trucks and security is a big feature of the site, with a manned barrier preventing unwanted access. This makes it a very popular place for those stopping over with valuable loads.

Food choices

The site offers fresh and locally sourced food. The canteen-style restaurant is open on Monday to Thursday from 0600-2200 (with the last orders for food being taken at 2130) and on Fridays from 0600-1400, with last orders at 1330. Meals are available to be consumed either sitting in the clean seating area or for take-away.

A full English, which is a choice of six items, costs £6 and that includes a hot drink. A Hungry breakfast, which is eight items and a drink, is a pound more. The Route 45 breakfast is 10 items and is £9, also including a tea or coffee. The vegetarian breakfast is scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns and a hot drink and is £5.

If you don’t want a full breakfast then there are plenty of other choices. A toasted wrap or panini with five items is £5 and a two-item ‘brekkie sandwich’ is £3. Eggs – poached, fried or scrambled – on toast is £3, porridge is £2 (with fruit, it’s another 50p). Crumpets and a hot drink is £2.50, a croissant and drink is £3 while toast or bread and butter is 50p a slice.

Moving on to lunch options, PJM offers baguettes, rolls and wraps at £3. These include a choice of BLT, cheese and pickle, chicken, bacon and mayo amongst others. Salads are available at £3 (small) and £5 (large).

Paninis and toasted sandwiches are £3 and soup with a roll is £2.50. Jacket potatoes are £4.50, and there is the usual choice of fillings for these.

Dinners start at £8 and feature burgers – all served with chips and coleslaw, all day brunch, lasagne, chicken curry, chilli, hunter’s chicken, cod and chips, omelettes, sausage and mash, gammon and egg, scampi and Cajun chicken. The canteen also offers a range of specials.

The site also offers a take out delivery service when the canteen is closed, and this is available from 1700 on a Friday through to 1900 on a Sunday and uses the best of the local take out establishments including Chinese, Indian and Pizza available to order; simply contact security upon arrival who will organise this.

What strikes you about this site is how clean it is. The eating area is immaculate. The tables were cleared immediately by staff which is always good to see. It really is a lovely ambience in which to eat. You can also watch the TV while eating. There is also free wi-fi available

The PJM Lorry Park offers a loyalty card scheme – the cards are available free to pick up, and benefits include exclusive perks and monthly promotions throughout the year. With each overnight stay you’ll receive a stamp and you can claim a free gift when the card is complete.

Parking

The site is open 24/7 for parking. It is free for the first two hours when eating in canteen (there is a £3 minimum spend) then £22 per night, which includes a £9 food voucher. Trailer Drop is £15 per 24 hours. There is also dedicated refrigeration and transporter parking areas.

For weekend parking, from Friday 1330 through to Sunday 1900, parking is £14 per 24 hours. As the canteen is closed, there are vending machines available.

The security cameras were updated in 2014, but the site also benefits from security guards 24 hours a day, seven days a week as well as CCTV coverage and an alarmed perimeter fence.

There is a truck wash, which costs £10 for a tractor unit, £20 for a car transporter, £28 for an artic curtainsider, £22 for a rigid truck or an non-curtainsider artic and £18 for rigid non-curtainsider.

Overall this is a pleasant site. From the outside it might look a little bit unusual by virtue of the fact it’s a small part of a much bigger building, but it’s safe, secure and the food is good. And, as I say, it’s very clean!
